Emory Prepares For UAA Round Robin II
UAA ROUND ROBIN II FACTS – After
splitting a pair of matches against non-Division III opponents last
weekend, the No. 2-ranked Emory volleyball team readies itself for
another bout of conference play this Saturday and Sunday (Oct.
16-17) when it competes at the University Athletic Association
Round Robin II. Serving as host will be Brandeis
University.
Emory will play four matches, starting with No. 1-ranked and
defending NCAA D-III champion Washington University on Saturday
starting at 10:30 a.m. The Eagles then will meet the
University of Rochester in a 2:30 p.m. start. On Sunday,
Emory will meet up with Brandeis at 10:00 a.m., before closing out
the weekend with a scheduled noon clash against the University of
Chicago.
THE COACHES – Emory Head Coach Jenny
McDowell (Georgia, ’89) is in her 15th year at the
helm of the Eagles’ program. During her stint at Emory,
McDowell has posted a school and career won-lost ledger of
457-121. She has 11 campaigns of 30 or more wins and has
directed the program to 14 consecutive trips to the NCAA
Tournament. She guided Emory to its first-ever national title
in 2008 and was named as the AVCA National Coach of the Year.
Washington University is led by Rich Luenemann
(Eastern Illinois, 1972), who is in his 12th campaign as head
coach. Heading into the weekend, Luenemann, who has guided the
Bears to three national titles, has a school record of
401-52. Now in his 30th year as a college head
coach, which includes an 18-year stint at St. Francis (1981-1998),
Luenemann owns a career mark of 991-314.
In her third season as the head coach at the University of
Rochester is Ladi Iya (Evansville, 2001).
Prior to her current post, she served as an assistant at
Evansville, and has other coaching stops at Nicholls State
University and the University of Buffalo.
Michelle Kim (SUNY-Binghamton, 1996) is in her
seventh year calling the shots for the Brandeis program.
While with the Judges, she has chalked up a school record of
130-105.
Guiding the fortunes of the Chicago program is third-year head
coach Vanessa Walby (Wisconsin-Whitewater,
2002). Heading into an Oct. 12 match vs. Concordia, Walby has
recorded a 66-35 won-lost slate
2010 RECORDS – Emory stands 17-3 in overall
play (3-0 UAA). Last Friday, the Eagles defeated NCAA
Division II foe USC-Aiken, 3-2, before coming out on the short end
of a 3-1 decision to NAIA power and undefeated Lee University on
Saturday. The Eagles are ranked No. 2 nationally among
Division III programs.
Washington University, ranked No.1, meets Emory with an unblemished
mark of 21-0. Over the weekend, WU hosted and captured its own
Washington University Bears Classic, running off a 4-0 record.
Rochester heads into the weekend, sporting an overall record of
11-9 (0-3 UAA). On Saturday, the Yellowjackets upended
Brockport and Buffalo State by 3-0 scores.
Brandeis stands 13-7 (1-2 UAA) following 3-0 victories against
Colby-Sawyer and Keene State, respectively, last Saturday.
Chicago, ranked No. 17 nationally, owned a solid 19-5 overall
effort (2-1 UAA) heading into its Tuesday night home match against
Concordia.
SERIES RECORDS – Washington University
stands 45-4 against Emory. Last season, after the Bears
topped Emory in the UAA Round Robin II, the Eagles regrouped to
come away with a 3-0 win in the UAA Championship match.
Emory holds a 19-14 edge in the all-time series against
Rochester.
The Eagles have won 31 of 37 meetings against Brandeis. Last
year, Emory captured both meetings against the Judges.
Emory owns a 27-11 margin in the series with Chicago. The
Eagles and Maroons met twice last season with the Eagles earning
victories on both occasions.
EAGLES DUO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Serving as
captains for the 2010 Eagles will be seniors Natalie
Schonefeld (Riviera, TX) and Amelia
McCall (Montgomery, AL).
NUMBERS TO WATCH – Emory’s 3-2
win over USC-Aiken boosted the team’s record to 4-0 in
five-set matches this year … The Eagles’ loss at home
to Lee ended a 21-match home win streak … A look at this
week’s UAA stats reveal that Emory holds down the No. 1 with
a 28.6 hitting percentage … The Eagles rank No. 2 in kills
per set (13.37 kps) and stand No. 1 in blocks per set (2.11 bps)
… Junior setter Natalie Schonefeld is No. 2
among UAA players in assists (10.48 aps) and 18th in
digs (2.80 dps) … Heading into the weekend, Schonefeld holds
down the No. 3 spot on the school’s all-time list with 3,518
assists and is 71 shy from passing Madison Robelen and moving into
the No. 2 spot … Senior Amelia McCall tops
the squad and ranks fifth among UAA players with a 3.18 kills per
set average … McCall has recorded 14 outings of
double-figure terminations … In addition, she owns seven
consecutive matches of double-doubles and has eight on the year
… Amelia is 23 kills shy of reaching 800 in her career
… Junior Jessica McAlvany is second on the
team and sixth on the UAA ladder with a 3.14 kills per set showing
… McAlvany, who had an eight-match streak of 10 or more
terminations snapped in the Lee encounter, has chalked up 13
performances of double digits in that category … Sophomore
Breanah Bourque is third member of the team to
rank among the UAA leaders in kills, holding down the No. 8 slot
with a 3.09 per-set average … Bourque is No. 2
on the league with a 36.5 hitting percentage … As a
team, Emory has hit 30.0 percent or better in 10 matches this year
… Junior Ali Wright (Matteson, IL)
stands eighth among UAA players with a 32.7 hitting percentage
while ranking in a tie for 13th all-time at Emory with
231 total blocks.
