Emory Volleyball Swept At Berry

Emory Volleyball Swept At Berry

The No. 4-ranked Emory volleyball team saw a three-match win streak snapped on Tuesday evening as it dropped a South Region contest at Berry College.  The Vikings raised their record to 17-3 following a 3-0 decision (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) over the Eagles who saw their overall slate dip to 17-3.

In a contest that featured some outstanding defense by both squads, Berry finished with an edge in the hitting department, checking in with an attack percentage of .192 (38-14—125) vs. .145 (46-25—145) for Emory.  The Eagles registered a 63-59 edge in digs while Berry countered with an 11-6 advantage in total blocks.

Junior Sydney Leimbach tied for match honors with 12 kills, her sixth double-figure effort of the season, and closed out the night hitting .346 (12-3—26).  Leimbach also topped the club with five (3-2) total blocks. Freshman Leah Saunders totaled 11 terminations and 15 digs which represented her third double-double (kills/digs) on the year. Sophomore Morgan McKnight and freshman Maggie Rimmel chipped in nine and six kills, respectively. Sophomore Elyse Thompson paced the team with 18 digs.

Set 1
** After falling behind by an 11-4 count, the Eagles unleash a 9-0 barrage, sparked by a pair of kills by Saunders and two service aces by Rimmel, to claim a 13-11 lead.
** The Eagles extend their margin to 18-14 after a termination by Leimbach, but the Vikings use a 6-2 spurt to knot the score at 20-20.
** Emory accounts for three of the next four points to move ahead by a 23-21 margin, but BC scores the next four points, with Emily Hancock and Hannah Billiard each coming up with two terminations, to claim the set.
** BC hits .143 (11-6—35) compared to the Eagles' .105 (13-9—38).
** Saunders and Leimbach lead the offensive effort with five and four kills, respectively.

Set 2
** Emory finds itself down, 6-2, in the early going but eventually rallies to post a 14-11 advantage after a kill by McKnight caps off a 3-0 run.
** Another termination by McKnight gives Emory a 15-13 lead, but the Vikinsg rattle off four straight points to move ahead, 17-15.
** Back-to-back kills by Leimbach allows Emory to tie the set at 19-19, but BC scores three of the next four points to assume a 22-20 lead.
** After a successful put-away by McKnight draws the Eagles to within one point, Berry nails down the last three points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
** Emory hits .295 (15-4—37) in the second game with McKnight pounding out five kills.

Set 3
** The set is a nip-and-tuck affair throughout and sees Emory use a 3-0 run to deadlock the score at 10-10.
** Emory never claims the lead after the 10-10 score as the Vikings limit any momentum that the Eagles seem to be on the verge of generating.
** BC's Hannah Billiard comes through with back-to-back kills to give the home team a 17-15 lead, but Emory bounces back with terminations by Saunders and Leimbach to tie it at 17-17.
** Berry builds three two-point leads, but Emory battles on to force ties at 21-21, 22-22 and 23-23.
** The Vikings nail down the decision with a kill and an Emory attack error.
** Leimbach and McKnight each come through with four kills in the final game.

Emory returns to action this Saturday and Sunday (October 14-15) when it travels to Chicago to compete in the UAA Round Robin II.
