Emory Cross Country Teams Wind Up Competition At UW-Oshkosh Invitational

The Emory men’s and women’s cross country teams continued their respective 2011 campaigns on Saturday when they competed at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.  The meet was held at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wisconsin.

The 17th-ranked women’s squad fared well with an eighth-place finish out of 43 teams.  The Eagles totaled 256 points, just six shy of No. 16 Hope College.  Taking home first place was No. 3-ranked Washington University with 61 points.  No. 5 MIT was runner-up with123 points while No. 7 Calvin captured third place (188 pts.)  Rounding out the top five were No. 13 St. Olaf (190 pts.) and No. 25 Ohio Northern (222 pts.).  Emory had a pair of entries post top-30 finishes in the 395-runner field, led by senior Tess Gallegos who covered the 6k course in a time of 22:34, good for 18th place.  Classmate Sara Gelb was the next Eagle to cross the finish line with her effort of 22:47 placing her 29th.   Junior Melanie Frank churned out a performance of 23:09 that put her in the No. 60 position while sophomore Emily Caesar (23:17, 67th) and freshman Hannah Moriarty (23:29, 85th) rounded out the team’s scorers.

The men’s side came in 21st out of 47 teams, finishing with 660 points.  No. 1-ranked North Central (Ill.) held true to form and raced to a first-place showing with 49 points.  No. 5 Washington University was second (137 pts.) while Wheaton College was third.  No. 3 Calvin (156 pts) and No. UW-Oshkosh (158 pts.) closed out the top five finishers.  Senior Geraint Davies paced the Eagles’ contingent, clocking an 8K time of 26:23 that was good for 81st place (78th scoring spot) in the 434-runner field.  Sophomore Hank Ashforth the No. 2 Emory performer with his time of 26:41 landing him in the 122nd spot.  Other runners who scored for the Eagles included senior Tim Halinski (26:51), sophomore Eddie Mulder (27:12) and junior Stephen Ellwood (27:16).  

Both the men’s and women’s teams will send a contingent of competitors to next Saturday’s (Oct. 22) Southeast Classic hosted by Berry College in Rome, Georgia.
