The Emory University men's and women’s cross country teams turned in successful performances at 31st annual Sewanee Invitational, with both squads registering second-place performances out of 11 teams.

The women’s team, ranked 24th nationally among D-III programs, recorded 62 points and trailed only Division I member Mississippi State’s top mark of 18 points.  Rhodes College took home third place with 76 points while Centre College (95 pts.) and Tennessee Tech (152 pts.) rounded out the top five finishers.

Battling unusually warm conditions, senior Sabrina Jeppson spearheaded the women’s effort, crossing the finish in 10th position out of 133 entries with a personal-best 6K time of 22:47.  Right behind her in 11th place was junior Melanie Frank who also clocked a personal-best showing of 22:48.  Freshman Stephanie Crane enjoyed a memorable collegiate debut with a performance of 23:17, good for 15th place, while sophomore Emily Caesar was the fourth Eagle to score with a personal-best mark of 23:34 that placed 17th.  Senior Sara Gelb rounded out the squad’s scorers with a 23:39, good for the No. 18 slot.  All totaled, Emory had six runners come through with 6K personal bests including sophomore Sarah Klass (24:08), senior Paulina Belsky (25:51) and Meredith Lorch (25:54).

Sophomore Eddie Mulder, competing in his first race in an Emory uniform, led the men’s side with an 8K showing of 27:44, good for seventh place overall out of 118 contestants.  The Eagles had three of the race’s top-10 performers with senior Geraint Davies (27:49) and junior Stephen Ellwood (27:50), coming in at ninth and tenth, respectively.  Ryan Callahan was the fourth Eagle and No. 2 freshman overall to finish with a 28:01, ranking him 15th in the field, while sophomore Alex Fleischhacker closed out the team’s scoring with his showing of 28:10 good for the No. 28 slot.
