Emory Men's Tennis Defeats Williams In Quarterfinals Of NCAA D-III Championships

The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis team has advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA D-III Championships following a Monday evening quarterfinal-round win over Williams.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 19-4 following a 5-0 decision over the No. 4-ranked Ephs, who closed out their season at 15-5.

Emory took control of the match after winning all three doubles matches. The No. 2 team of juniors Jonathan Jemison and Adrien Bouchet secured the first point of the contest with an 8-4 triumph over Calvin Chung and Alex Taylor.  The Eagles extended their advantage following the result at first doubles when senior Scott Rubinstein and junior James Spaulding won for the 20th time this season with an 8-4 verdict over the Ephs' duo of Brian Grodecki and Ananth Raghavan.  Senior Andrew Harrington and freshman Hayden Cassone completed the sweep following a hard-fought 9-8 (7-4) outcome at No. 3 against Arturo Kam and Jordan Sadowsky.

Needing two points to seal the outcome, the Eagles picked up one of those at No. 3 singles when senior Alex Josepher came away with a 6-4, 6-0 win vs. Sachin Ranghavan, his 18th victory against 10 setbacks this season.  Cassone then recorded the deciding point, bouncing back from a slow start to earn a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph against Austin Barr at No. 2.  Cassone has won his last three and eight of his last 10 singles matches and stands 25-5 overall this season, 17-3 during the spring.

Emory's opponent in Tuesday's semifinals will be No. 1-ranked Middlebury (23-4), who chalked up a 5-1 win in the quarters against Whitman. The Eagles and Panthers are scheduled to square off at 2:00 pm (EDT).  The other semifinal will pit No. 3-ranked Bowdoin against No. 7 Chicago.
